We were featured in the Saturday Times on 9/18. Find out what reporter David Gonzales said about us, and what we are doing now! Then there was the time that I was riding the F train back to queens. The car was almost empty except for man sitting on the opposite end and woman sitting a few seats away. I happened to be wearing a fake flower in my hair that day, and the woman commented that she liked it. I thanked her and turned back to my book. Then she asked if she could have it. I politely tried to tell her that I happened to really like this flower hair accessory, and that she couldn’t. Then something strange happened. She lifted one hand off of her leg and loudly announced “A,” like the letter. The next moment she lifted her other hand off her leg and said “B.” This went on for a few letters, and then she stopped. She turned to me and said, “I want that flower. Don’t make me hurt you.” The other man on the train didn’t even look up. I didn’t think he would save me in case of an attack. I got off at the next stop and waited for another train. In these hot summer days, there is no relief underground. The Subway tunnels we walk through to get to where we are going are super duper steamy! I was going out to dinner, did my hair all pretty, got dressed up and had to ride the subway way downtown. So, me being not the best subway navigator took a wrong train, no biggie, easily fixed, so me and my group were walking down there and it was sooooo hottt. I felt like i was working out in the gym, i was one sweaty pretty lady, and my hair was a mess! Not cute! Thank god the cars are air conditioned they offered some air to breathe. I was so hot, I was so delirious I was walking on the yellow! I know right?? How do you feel about the hot hot weather down in the subs, and how do you beat the heat? Happy Traveling! The subway for me has been more than a mode of transport. Or rather a very productive time of transport. I catch up on my reading pleasure and otherwise. I have some time away from being plugged into the internet/rest of the world, where I can think and recap any to do’s. I get to play games on my cellphone which is hugely relaxing. And on the occasions where I’d rather observe the individuals on the subway I am reminded of an amazing concept (from a play called Deadman’s Cellphone by Sarah Ruhl) that cars, planes, trains are modes of transportation that is too fast for the human spirit. It says when we enter these vehicles our souls need to time to catch up. A beautiful way to describe the detached nature found on the Subways. Now I agree this isn’t a perfect concept but a just a beautiful one. It matches exactly how one lovely gentleman, who I had the pleasure of interviewing, stated the thing he expects to see every time he steps onto the subway was lonely people. How everyone is isolated and even though surrounded by many people you couldn’t tell by the way people act on the train. Now I don’t believe he was sad or that he wanted the Subways to be always festive, but I couldn’t help but link the concept and the outside observation together. The City Room blog on NYT online asked readers to share their stories of people going onto the subway tracks to retreive lost personal items. Three people have been killed in the last few onths for a gym bag, a jacket, and an ipod respectively. Would you enter the tracks? Here is one from the Photo Reel Check it out! 4/14 (12:30am) E Train over the Damned F Line “so one day my friend and i were coming back into queens from the city and we were innocently sitting and laughing at the way this lady was eating her chocolate covered pretzles. it was as if shed never seen chocolate covered pretzles before in her life and as if they were as precious as gold. but thats really not the point of the story, just some background info. So as we were sitting, this guy in a completely whit outfit walks into the subway cart right in across from us. (it wasnt rush hour, so tehre were seats everywhere, but the guy just stood there). Then to our dismay, they guy turns to face us and we realize that hes not wearing any underwear. you may ask how we knew he wasnt wearing underwear. . . well white pants + hot day + no underwear = a sight that we really had no intentions of seeing. So to make matters worse, he begins to talk to us (i really have no recollection of what he was talking about) and while he is talking he naturally plays with his member. (Did i mention we were sitting and he was standing?)but thankfully our stop was the next stop, so we only experienced it for about 5 mins.” “The craziest thing that happened for me on the subway when I was five…A homeless guy was living on the F train and spent the majority of the trip yelling at someone for sitting on *HIS* bench on the train….it was crazy.” |
